Founded by Dr. Mark Parker, Pediatric Endocrinologist, to provide a fun, safe and educational environment for children with Type 1 Diabetes in a day-camp setting spanning 3 days. Home Base is located at Pleasant Knoll Middle School, Fort Mill, SC Camp KUDOS hosts 110 children, ages 4 years old through the 8th grade. Here doctors, nurses, dietitians and camp counselors all donate their time to help children understand Diabetes The kids, check blood sugars and take insulin. They see that they are not alone in these responsibilities and encourage each other at camp. Older children act as mentors for the younger ones. Some of these children have never been out of their parents’ sight since they were diagnosed. Each year, at least one child for the very “First Time” . will . . . . . . * Check their own blood sugar for the first time * Count carbohydrates * Calculate their own insulin dosage * Give themselves their “first shot”
