    Teen Retreat

    Our next Teen Retreat will be held April 23 - April 25, 2021 at the Y Camp in Boone, Iowa. This weekend deals specifically with the concerns and needs of teenagers. Teens are increasingly independent and face ongoing challenges related to making decisions and managing their diabetes. Activities are designed to challenge and support teens so they leave the weekend feeling recharged and empowered.

    Family Camp

    • Dates: April 23, 2021 to April 25, 2021
    • Audience: Families of Youth & Teen
    • Program Type: Overnight Camp

    Our next Family Camp weekend will be held April 23 - April 25, 2021 at the Y Camp in Boone, Iowa. Children with diabetes of all ages are encouraged to attend with their family members, close friends, grandparents, and even babysitters to learn about managing diabetes. Because diabetes affects the whole family, Camp Hertko Hollow’s Family Camp Retreats are for the whole family. This weekend is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together to learn more about diabetes and share their common experiences in a supportive setting. It’s also great for newly diagnosed children or children who haven't attended summer camp yet – during the Family Camp Retreat they will get a taste of what summer camp is all about. The weekend includes numerous camp activities in addition to workshops on diabetes. Informative speakers and panel discussion give everyone a new perspective

    Counselor In Training (CIT)

    • Dates: June 27, 2021 to July 03, 2021

    • Program Type: Day Camp - Multi Days

    Counselor In Training (CIT) – for 17 year olds The CIT program is designed to offer qualified young people an opportunity to prepare to become a counselor at Camp Hertko Hollow in future years. Emphasis is placed upon developing leadership skills, sensitivity to children and program skills. Participation in the CIT program is by selection. Those interested in the program must complete an application process, which includes an application and two letters of recommendation. Applicants who are not selected as a CIT candidate for 2020 may still register for Teen Week (July 5 - July 11, 2020) as a camper. To be a CIT: Applicants must be 17 years old as of June 28, 2020. A positive and cooperative attitude and pleasant disposition are critical attributes for the position. Applicants must have previously attended Camp Hertko Hollow as a camper. Applicants must be working towards good control of their diabetes and have a good understanding of diabetes and its care.

    Kids Week

    Camp Hertko Hollow provides camp programs on the scenic grounds of the Y Camp located north of Boone, Iowa and consists of modern facilities with access to 400 acres of forest in the picturesque Boone River Valley. This beautiful atmosphere offers a variety of recreational activities like archery, swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and rock climbing (just to name a few). These activities allow campers to try things outside of their normal routine, gain new hobbies, and discuss what they learn about character and personal growth. Days at camp are a mix of cabin-group based activities and free-choice periods which are supervised at all times. Structured times are designated for education programs as well as diabetes management, meals, and rest. Activity and fun play is just the beginning.

    Mini Camp 1

    Children in kindergarten and first grade can enjoy their first experience at diabetes camp by participating in a half week session at Camp Hertko Hollow. The Camp Hertko Hollow staff provide a caring and safe environment as the campers enjoy activities and make new friends.

    Mini Camp 2

    This week is guaranteed to be jam packed full of new experiences, new activities, and age-appropriate challenges that teens need to grown and gain independence.  Ages 13-17.

    Leader In Training

    The Hertko Future Leaders (HFL) offers two programs for teens who want to further their leadership skills and/or prepare to become a counselor at Camp Hertko Hollow in future years. Two programs, the Counselor in Training (CIT) program and the Leaders in Training (LIT) program are offered to 16 and 17 year olds who are looking to gain valuable leadership skills that will serve them well at home, in school, and in their own communities. Leaders In Training (LIT) – for 16 year olds The LIT program is designed for teens who want to enhance their skills in leadership. Emphasis is placed upon developing interpersonal and communication skills, as well as team-building through activities and service projects. Participation in the LIT program is by selection.
