AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad Inc) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has been offering life changing educational and empowerment programs abroad for nearly 20 years. AYUDA uses an innovative peer leadership model through which international volunteers serve as catalysts to empower local youth living with diabetes to manage their diabetes. AYUDA’s volunteer service-delivery model includes a robust pre-program training (online and in-person), meaningful experience abroad, and post-program evaluation. AYUDA’s volunteers work in partnership with local diabetes organizations to support and enhance diabetes education and outreach programs that target underserved youth with diabetes. In the countries where AYUDA volunteers work, AYUDA’s empowerment model directly impacts young people with diabetes and their families, local health professionals, local governments and ministries of health.

Upcoming AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad) Programs

    En El Camino 2018

    • Dates: June 22, 2019 to July 06, 2019
    • Audience: Youth & Teen
    • Program Type: Event - Part or Full Day

This program is aimed at those who want to combine diabetes outreach with a love travel and exploration. Since our hallmark program, Campo Amigo Dominicano is based in Santo Domingo, it cannot serve everybody around the country. Our local partner organization, Aprendiendo a Vivir (AAV), has requested that AYUDA work with them on a program to take the educational and empowerment experience of our traditional camp program on the road to other provinces in the Dominican Republic. Volunteers travel with local Dominican youth leaders, representatives of AAV, and AYUDA staff members to 5 provinces/cities in the Dominican Republic to run day-long educational outreach and local capacity-building programs. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn from people with people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and help provide them with the tools that motivate them to live happier, healthier lives.

    Campo Amigo Dominicano

    • Dates: July 13, 2019 to July 31, 2019
    • Audience: Youth & Teen
    • Program Type: Day Camp - Multi Days

During this program volunteers will collaborate with AYUDA’s partner organization “Aprendiendo a Vivir” (AAV), a local diabetes organization based in Santo Domingo. Accepted volunteers, led by AYUDA staff, will work closely with AAV local staff, medical students, and rising youth leaders to plan and implement community outreach projects that will motivate and support young people with diabetes and their families. In addition, the team will work together to run Día de la Familia and Campo Amigo Dominicano, two weekend diabetes education family programs.
