A Residential camp serving 200 youth with diabetes. Ages 8 - 17, both boys and girls. Camp location is the Rotary Sunshine Campus in Rush, NY. 152 acre campus. Activities include athletics, swimming (pool), arts and crafts, music and drama, nature, pond, fishing, paddle boats, splash pad, radio, climbing wall, challenge course, overnight camp-out once during the session. Also a creative and lively evening program. Most counselors have diabetes. Campers are divided into 5 cabin groups of about 20 campers each. All cabins have indoor bath and shower facilities. Modern health office. Medical staff include nurses, certified diabetes educators, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric residents and medical students from the local area. All camper medical care is closely supervised. Camp menu is developed by a registered dietitian. Campers benefit from adult role models and interaction with peers. Campers are encouraged to become more independent in their diabetes care.
